New Year, New Equipment for SchoolSport
Sir John Beckwith, funder of the Youth Sport Trust (YST) in U.K through a “father” of SchoolSport David Haskins, has sponsored the purchasing of new sports equipment for the programme.
The equipment include shot put, javelin, balls and nets for football, handball, netball and many more including an international standard table tennis board with bats.
The items which come as a moral booster to the Young Leaders (Local Volunteers) of the SchoolSport programme, will go a long way to help in continuing to give pupils and teachers in participating schools, the opportunity to learn and play many games and use some of the modern sports equipment that the pupils might have heard and read about but have not had the chance to make use of.
A sports teacher at Rachel Preparatory School in Maamobi, Accra said, “Some of us have been limited to only one or two sporting activities in our schools due to the lack of equipment. But with these equipment we (P.E teachers) can now introduce and even practice some more athletic activities which will make our lessons more interesting”
SchoolSport events have mostly been limited to racing (running) and a few ball activities but with the new sports equipment, sports festivals are going to be more exciting and the Young Leaders have no excuse than to plan, organize and deliver a successful “Mini Olympics” in the next academic term (June) this year.
Co-ordinator (Ambrose Nazzah)’s comment
“This is the time we can move from the usual 3 legged races, spoon and lime races and the other fun games that we play during our sports festivals to serious baton relay, shot put, javelin and some of he games played at the Olympics”.
“We thank Mr. Beckwith for his kind gesture. We promise to make good use of the new equipment, and hope other philanthropists; groups and institutions emulate him and come to our aid”
“As for Dave, …………………. only God knows best!”
